ALO

ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) is a California-based jam band known for their eclectic mix of rock, funk, jazz, and pop. Formed in 1998, the band’s core lineup includes Zach Gill on keyboards and vocals, Steve Adams on bass, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz on guitar, and Dave Brogan on drums. The band’s name, which stands for Animal Liberation Orchestra, reflects their fun, free-spirited approach to music, blending elements of improvisation with catchy, upbeat melodies.

ALO originated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where the founding members met and began playing together in various college parties and gigs. Over the years, their musical style evolved, incorporating influences from jazz, soul, and jam bands, which set them apart from other contemporary groups. Their sound is characterized by extended instrumental jams, tight musicianship, and soulful harmonies, often drawing comparisons to bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead.

The band gained wider recognition in the early 2000s, particularly after Zach Gill started collaborating with Jack Johnson, who eventually signed ALO to his Brushfire Records label. Their 2006 album, Roses & Clover, was a critical success, showcasing their ability to blend feel-good lyrics with intricate musical arrangements. Other notable albums include Man of the World (2010), produced by Johnson, and Sounds Like This (2012), which highlighted the band’s knack for storytelling and musical exploration.

ALO is known for their energetic live performances, which often feature extended improvisational jams and audience interaction. They have a loyal fan base and have toured extensively, both as headliners and as support for artists like Jack Johnson and G. Love & Special Sauce. ALO’s music is celebrated for its positivity, its groove-centric style, and its commitment to the art of live performance.
