Built to Spill is an indie rock band that originated in Boise, Idaho, in 1992. The band was formed by guitarist and vocalist Doug Martsch after the breakup of his previous band, Treepeople. Known for its distinctive sound that blends elements of indie rock, lo-fi, and neo-psychedelia, Built to Spill has become a mainstay of the indie music scene over the past three decades.

Doug Martsch is the band’s only constant member, serving as its creative force and principal songwriter. His intricate guitar work, characterized by extended solos and unique tunings, is a hallmark of Built to Spill’s music. Martsch’s introspective lyrics often explore themes of existentialism, personal reflection, and the nature of reality, giving the band’s songs a philosophical depth that resonates with listeners.

Built to Spill’s early albums, including their debut Ultimate Alternative Wavers (1993) and There’s Nothing Wrong with Love (1994), garnered a cult following, laying the groundwork for their later success. Their major-label debut, Perfect from Now On (1997), marked a significant shift, featuring more complex arrangements and longer, more expansive tracks. The album was critically acclaimed and is often considered one of their best works. The follow-up, Keep It Like a Secret (1999), further cemented their reputation with its more accessible sound and tighter songwriting.

Throughout the years, Built to Spill has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Martsch remaining the only permanent member. Despite these changes, the band’s sound has remained consistently influential, marked by a blend of melodic sensibilities and guitar-driven experimentation. They have released several albums over the years, with Untethered Moon (2015) and When the Wind Forgets Your Name (2022) showcasing their continued evolution and relevance in the indie rock landscape. Built to Spill remains a beloved and enduring force in the music world, known for their compelling live performances and commitment to artistic integrity.
