The Grateful Dead began in 1965 when Jerry Garcia and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan turned their jug band into an electric tour de force. The band went onto become one of the most famous live music attractions in the world, and toured extensively across North America and even in Europe and Egypt. They broke up in 1995 following the death of Jerry Garcia. Original band members included: Jerry Garcia, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart.
